There was also a significant economic recession in 1958...new car sales were way down...all in all a "perfect storm" for the large, weirdly styled, problematic, expensive and large engined Edsel...and Ford Treasurer Robert McNamara was out to kill the brand even as it was launching! It was a co...I was one the few who liked the Edsel. It was a concept car at that time but people didn't give Ford enough time to work out the bugs that new cars have.
